Sustainable Shed

Our shed is being constructed from 100% recycled and salvaged materials. Our lumber was salvaged through the Long Beach office of sustainability, it is all from the old SST records building on 4th avenue. The door was found in an alley and the hardware was donated. We are still in need of materials to finish building our shed. If you have any of the following please let us know.

  • siding
  • plywood
  • roofing materials
  • peg board
  • tools (to fill it once its built)

Donated Materials

Almost everything we have used to build the garden has been salvaged. Our newest find is this little greenhouse, free from craigslist.com. We are doing everything possible to be completely sustainable.

If you have materials to donate please contact us. We love recycled goods but need to make sure we have a use for them before you bring it to the garden.

Thank you-

Thank You Everybody!

Thank you all so much for Saturday. The turnout was amazing, we sold plots, plants, ate baked goods, and made new friends. We raised enough money to pay for our insurance and have a little pocket change left over for that first water bill.

If you were unable to come out, enjoy the pictures and see what you missed...

Opening day!
Rachael setting up shop...
Lots of action at the sign in table. Thank you to Commander Billy Quach, he made a generous donation to sponsor a family. If you are interested in following his footsteps please let us know. Sponsoring a garden plot helps us deter the costs of the lower income farmers.
Thanks to one of our farmers, Stephen he made beautiful bromeliads for our plant sale. They were the first items to sell out.
Don Miller & Sons Plumbing Supply donated all of our irrigation materials. Please call Kim or Nicol, support local business...
Irrigation arrived!
ready set...

Plant Sale, July 18th

Hello Gardeners-

Hope you all had a nice and cool weekend. Thanks to all that came out and worked hard in the blazing sun, it was a great first day in the garden. We ended up with a total of 39 plots plus we have a little room to grow if we need to.

Next item up is the ribbon cutting and plant sale. Some of you had mentioned you had items to donate for this event. Please let me know if you have anything for us to sell and we will pick it up this week. Or if you would like to bring it on Saturday please plan on being there at 8:30 am. The sale is running from 9 to 11.

We will be selling plants, plots, baked goods and anything else we can get our hands on. All proceeds are going to paying for our irrigation system. If you do not have anything to donate or sell we can also use help in manning the booth. If neither if these things sounds appealing to you we would also take your tax deductible donations.

If any of you would like a plot but have not signed up please do so. We have 20 available and I have a feeling they will soon be gone. The available numbers are listed on a previous post.

Thanks for all the support-

Happy Growing!

Also, we will have a cooler with ice and drinks but if you also have something to share please bring it.

Garden Progress

Aloha gardeners-

Happy 4th of July. I hope you all are enjoying the beautiful day and eating lots of wonderful home grown food.

This week the Wrigley Garden saw lots of progress. We are working very hard to open the garden in time for a late summer planting. This Saturday, June 11th we will be at the site laying out all the garden plots. If you are available to come and help or even just swing by to say hi please do. If you have not been by the location this would be a great time to come and visit. You can get a feel for things and see where you would like your plot to be. We will be there from 8am until we finish.

We decided to have a variety of plot sizes to choose from. Our standard plot size is 4'x12'. In this amount of space you can grow a wide variety of fruits and veggies; tomatoes, greens, eggplant, brussels sprouts, okra the list goes on and on. This is the perfect size for a family plot. We also have a half size available, 4'x6'. We thought this might be a good idea for the folks who already garden at home and don't really need the larger size. This would be perfect if you wanted to grow something that is too large to grow at home; artichoke, blackberry's, corn, pumpkins, watermelon all of these things would be great grown in this smaller size. We also designed a kid size plot this 4'x4' square is great for them to grow their favorite edible or flower. I have a feeling we will see lots of strawberry's and everybody's favorite the mighty sunflower growing here soon.

Don't forget this Monday the 6th there is a Wrigley Association meeting happening at Veteran's park @ 101 E. 28th Street (off of Pacific Ave). As always the co-op exchange will be set up around 6:45. If you have any extra homegrown produce please bring it to the table. For now we will not be doing the seed exchange, we will however be collecting seeds if you have any to donate. We are also collecting gardening tools and the most needed, monetary funds.

Have a great holiday, see you Monday at the meeting or Saturday at the garden.

Aloha-
