Time for the big clean up- garden move!!

Hello gardeners and friends of Wrigley Garden-

Its time for us to put out the call for help. Our lease has expired and its time to move on.

Starting June 3rd and working every Friday & Saturday until the big move on the 23rd. Hours are from 9-12. Please wear closed toed shoes and bring some water for yourself.

Everyone is welcome and all efforts are appreciated. 

Please check the dates below and come on down to help us out. Its only 3 weekends so please try and make it.

Garden is Closing- Don't forget

Hello gardeners-

Don't forget this weekend is your last chance to remove all your personal belongings. After Sunday all items will be considered abandoned and we will start the demo.

We will be planning to move the remaining items out of the garden starting the middle of June. If you are interested in helping us please check back here or subscribe to the mailing list at www.longbeachlocal.org. Your help is much appreciated.

Wrigley Garden Volunteer Days on Hiatus

Hello volunteers-
Thank you so much for logging countless hours at Wrigley Garden. I hope you have learned something by coming by on our Friday volunteer days. We had many school groups come for a tour, seed starting lessons, chicken 101, planting tips and on and on.

I am putting our volunteer days on hiatus. Some of you may know that I am expecting a baby in the next few months and its time to take it easy.

Thank you again for your interest and dedication to urban farming and community gardening. I'll let you know when we are open again for volunteers. Please keep checking the blog for recipes, what to do now in your own garden and updates for Farm Lot 59.

Thank you Factory!!

What a weekend.

Saturday at The Factory/Dragster Expo was awesome. I met so many great Long Beach Locals. It was a perfect opportunity to spread the word about Farm Lot 59 and to promote our Sunday Farmers Market. We raised around $300 bucks thanks to Natalie and all her friends.

Sunday at the Farmers Market I was there selling my hand tied arrangements and promoting the farm. I think people are starting to make the connection with local agriculture and local products. Please keep spreading the word about those very important topics and helping us keep our dollars local.

This Sunday is a pie contest at the market, contact Kelli if you are interested or visit the website http://www.longbeachsundaymarket.com/ for all the updates.

Saturday the 24th we are having a workday at Wrigley Garden from 9:30-1. Our gardeners are being asked to be there at 9 for a quick meeting then its off to do chores followed by a potluck. Should be a great day in the garden. Hope to see you then.

Lookin' for an artist

Hello painters and crafters-

Wrigley Garden has built the cutest little farm stand but it needs a paint job. If any of you creative types are interested I would love hear your ideas. I will be at the garden this Friday if you would like to come down and see it for yourself. I will upload a picture tomorrow.

Earth Week!

Big week planned for all the tree hugging do gooders out there. Wednesday Wrigley Garden along with Green Lab and the Sunday Farmers Market will be at the Civic Center from 11-1:00. We will be giving away seeds and seedlings along with fresh brewed worm tea.

If you have any questions about your garden there will be Master Gardeners there to answer all your gardening questions. Stop by and say hello!

Food and Flowers Freedom Act- Support Silverlake

Silverlake is not that far from the LBC. Let's support local farming where ever their local may be.

A year since being shut down for selling organic homegrown flowers at local farmers' markets, and things are starting to change...
Thursday, March 25th, 2010

At 8:30am, thirty-some supporters of urban farming came to a public hearing at Van Nuys City Hall to say "YES!" to UFA's Food & Flowers Freedom Act.
And City Planning commissioners agreed.

Led by Bill Roschen, who called it "a happy day," commissioners voted across the board to allow fruit, flowers, nuts and seedlings to be grown at home for sale off-site - at local farmers' markets for example.

It was a big day for urban farming in LA, and a positive step forward for our local food and sustainability movements.

Angelenos: Thanks to City Council President Eric Garcetti and his team, we are on our way to being able to sell more than our garden-grown vegetables at market. For Silver Lake Farms, there is hope that we can return to market soon with organic, local flowers.

There are a few more official stages to go before the Food & Flower Freedom Act is a done deal. There will be a few more hearings, where public support will be just as critical.

If you support urban farming, CSAs, farmers' markets, and growing your own, then please come to the next hearing. shoot us an email hereand I'll keep you posted on the date.

Tree Planting

Hello Fellow Tree-huggers and Wrigley Gardeners-

Wrigley is Going Green! and the Wrigley Garden in conjunction with Southern California Edison, the City of Long Beach, Office of Sustainability and the neighbors of Taper Street and Fashion Avenue are planting 40 trees on April 24, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. We will meet at 1315 Taper Street (Northwest corner of Taper Street and Fashion Avenue--see map attached or link at bottom of email).

In preparation of the tree planting, we will be pre-digging the holes Saturday April 17th at 10:00 a.m.

Please bring a shovel and gloves to both events.
