Hot topic of conversation around the garden is where did all those piles of soil come from? last Sunday we did 4 runs to San Pedro. The soil that is already at the garden is spoken for but please go to San Pedro and get as much as you need, if you able to get extra for the garden that would be wonderful. Its a great program and best of all its FREE!

Wrigley Community Garden takes root on Henderson Avenue

A fresh new community garden spanning two city lots now blossoms at the site of a former drug house. Wrigley is Going Green (WiGG) and Council member Dee Andrews have secured the use of 1950-1960 Henderson Avenue for use as a temporary space for the Wrigley Community Garden.

Volunteers turned out last Saturday to prep the land and get ready for the first season of gardeners. Thanks to mulch from the Long Beach Mulch-a-Lot program and the group of hard working residents, the empty land was transformed into 39 ready-to-plant plots.

The Wrigley Garden is a two-year project designed to positively change the lives of local residents by helping them grow their own food. Available to all Long Beach residents, it’s first come, first served with a sliding scale starting at only $20 per year for Henderson Avenue residents.

The Wrigley Community Garden will officially open with a ribbon cutting ceremony and Plant Sale Saturday, July 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the garden 1950 & 1960 Henderson Avenue. The sale and celebration will feature plants, plots and baked goods, with proceeds going towards the installation of an irrigation system for the garden. Donations will also be accepted.

Our First Work Day

Huge thanks to everyone who came and helped out yesterday. This empty lot transformed into a garden in a matter of hours. It has already changed people's lives. In case you missed out on our first day there are some photo's for your enjoyment.

The mulch was provided by the city's Mulch-a-lot program. I would like to thanks Larry Rich for making that and tons of other things happen.

Tomorrow- Update

If you are coming by to help tomorrow, please also bring a rake. I got word that the mulch was spread but not completed. We might have to finish up the old fashioned way, good old hard labor.

Welcome To The Garden

Hello Gardeners!

Big exciting things happening on the garden front. Hopefully mulch will be going in next week, after that happens we will be looking nice and pretty.

We have begun collecting used gardening tools so if you have anything to donate please get in touch. We will also let you know as soon as the plots go on sale.
