Thank you Factory!!

What a weekend.

Saturday at The Factory/Dragster Expo was awesome. I met so many great Long Beach Locals. It was a perfect opportunity to spread the word about Farm Lot 59 and to promote our Sunday Farmers Market. We raised around $300 bucks thanks to Natalie and all her friends.

Sunday at the Farmers Market I was there selling my hand tied arrangements and promoting the farm. I think people are starting to make the connection with local agriculture and local products. Please keep spreading the word about those very important topics and helping us keep our dollars local.

This Sunday is a pie contest at the market, contact Kelli if you are interested or visit the website http://www.longbeachsundaymarket.com/ for all the updates.

Saturday the 24th we are having a workday at Wrigley Garden from 9:30-1. Our gardeners are being asked to be there at 9 for a quick meeting then its off to do chores followed by a potluck. Should be a great day in the garden. Hope to see you then.

Please view our Kickstarter campaign and spread the word!

No Farm Stand Tomorrow

Sorry folks but the cutest farm stand in town will be closed tomorrow. I'm working on finishing a project and will not be on site tomorrow.

I will however be at the Sunday Farmers Market with beautiful hand tied arrangements for sale. See you at the market.

Since Fridays seem to be bad for me what day would be good for the farm stand? Wednesdays? Tuesdays?

I was there selling hand tied arrangements as well as single stem peonies and lotus flowers. I also had my seed rack which is always a hit. I'll be making another order soon, let me know what you folks would like to grow. And Thank You to whoever pulled weeds at the Wrigley Garden today. You rock! Tomorrow we will be there from 9-12 pushing mulch around and moving the chicken yard if you want to come back!See you this Friday at the WG for Farm Stand Friday and back again Sunday selling more beautiful flowers and spending time with my friends.

First Friday - Farm Box!

Hello gang-

Tomorrow night is First Friday in Bixby Knolls. Long Beach Local will be on the corner of Atlantic and Bixby for our annual Mock Market.

This week we have Chef Sam Paano from Gourmet Conspiracy doing a demo with seasonal produce and lots of layers of taste. He told me what he was making but I forgot. Hey Sam, What's on the menu this week? Last month he cooked up a delicious stuffed chicken with squash blossoms and fresh veggies and for dessert he served short bread cookies from Shortnin Bread bakery and my Lemon Curd. I talked about that dessert for a few weeks after. YUM!

Shortnin Bread will be there and I hope they will be bringing the Peanut Butter and Jelly cupcakes. Justina stuffs the cupcakes with my homemade Strawberry Jam and makes a Peanut Butter Butter Cream icing. They are amazing!

And Kelli and I will be there with fresh produce. Just enough to hold you over until the Sunday Farmers Market happens on yes, Sunday. This week we are going to try out a $10 flat rate Farm Box. This week's selection will be strawberries, eggs, chives, squash, bush beans, mint and on and on. All the produce is grown locally by us (except the strawberries come from a Long Beach farmer). We use only heirloom seeds, no pesticides and harvest when perfectly ripe. The eggs come from our own chickens, they really don't get better than that. If you would like to pre-order please email me @ sashakanno@mac.com or post in the comments section and I will check it. You can also pay by Paypal, the link is on the right side of the blog page.

We will also be taking names for our CSA that will be happening by mid to late summer. If you are interested in receiving a Farm Box on a weekly or Biweekly basis now is the time to let us know as this program is starting to fill up quickly. Please let me know if you are interested in learning more about this.

And lastly this Sunday and the Sunday Farmers Market I will be there as a vendor. I will be selling my now famous Baker Creek Seed Rack as well as some beautiful flower bouquets. You all know me as a gardener and a farmer but my background is floral design. I am happy to be available to come to market with the season's best. Not all of the flowers are locally grown but hopefully someday soon they will.

Thanks for all the support and for helping to keep our money, food and bodies local. Its nice to stay off the freeway!

See you Friday in Bixby and Sunday at the Farmers Market!

Preserves available at the Farmers Market

everythinglongbeach likes our jams! Thanks to everyone who donates fruit and buys our products. Especially thanks to Nino's restaurant and Shortnin' Bread. Best roommates ever! All of you help us keep our food local. Made in the LBC!

2010-04-27 · By Editor

Fresh, delicious hand-crafted seasonal jams, preserves, pickles, relishes, sauces and more created by the Wrigley Garden are now available at several locations. Made in small batches from local ingredients, products currently include strawberry jelly, lemon curd, orange-ginger marmalade, rosemary-lemon butter, honey wine jelly and strawberry rhubarb jam and will change with the seasons. Local baker Shortnin’ Bread features the products at the Sunday Farmers’ Market (California @ Bixby) and at the Marine Stadium Farmers’ Market (Appian Way and Nieto Ave.) on Wednesday. Vendor Bee Canyon Ranch carries Wrigley Garden honey-based goods at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market.

“Every ingredient is organic and locally grown when possible,” said Wrigley Garden Director Sasha Kanno. “This direct connection between farmer and consumer means Long Beach can easily enjoy the season’s freshest local products.” Sales help support the Wrigley Garden, a community garden at 1950/1960 Henderson Avenue.

Some of the raw material for these sweet and savory treats comes from the Neighborhood Co-op Fruit Exchange. Volunteers harvest excess fruit from Long Beach residents, share it among neighbors and friends, preserve and donate the rest to a local food bank. If you have fruit or produce to donate please contact our Exchange Coordinator, Shelby Sanchez at 562.506.6214 or shelbysanchez@hotmail.com

The Wrigley Garden is a two-year project located on land owned by the City of Long Beach. Supporters include The Long Beach Neighborhood Foundation, Wrigley is Going Green, The Long Beach Community Foundation, Connected Corridors and the 6th and 7th district council offices.

For more information about Wrigley Garden products or to volunteer contact Sasha Kanno at 562-230-7207 or sasha@wrigleygarden.org.

Food and Flowers Freedom Act- Support Silverlake

Silverlake is not that far from the LBC. Let's support local farming where ever their local may be.
Thank you- Sasha

Message from Tara:
A year since being shut down for selling organic homegrown flowers at local farmers' markets, and things are starting to change...
Thursday, March 25th, 2010

At 8:30am, thirty-some supporters of urban farming came to a public hearing at Van Nuys City Hall to say "YES!" to UFA's Food & Flowers Freedom Act.
And City Planning commissioners agreed.

Led by Bill Roschen, who called it "a happy day," commissioners voted across the board to allow fruit, flowers, nuts and seedlings to be grown at home for sale off-site - at local farmers' markets for example.

It was a big day for urban farming in LA, and a positive step forward for our local food and sustainability movements.

Angelenos: Thanks to City Council President Eric Garcetti and his team, we are on our way to being able to sell more than our garden-grown vegetables at market. For Silver Lake Farms, there is hope that we can return to market soon with organic, local flowers.

There are a few more official stages to go before the Food & Flower Freedom Act is a done deal. There will be a few more hearings, where public support will be just as critical.

If you support urban farming, CSAs, farmers' markets, and growing your own, then please come to the next hearing. shoot us an email hereand I'll keep you posted on the date.

Thank you so much to everyone who wrote letters of support, and attended the public hearing on March 25th. You rock!

Thank you for supporting Silver Lake Farms.

Commercial Kitchen

Hello friends-

If any of you know of a commercial kitchen space that is not being used please let me know. Think churches or maybe a community center? We are currently renting a commercial kitchen where we make our jams and jellies but we (along with our partners Shortnin Bread) are looking for another kitchen to rent.

Thanks-
Sasha
