February Happenings
Hello Long Beach Locals-
I wanted to let you all know about our first work day at the farm. On Saturday, February 19th starting at 9am we will be cleaning up the site. Its not just cleaning up the farm but the entire gulch property. If you have not had the chance to come and check out the land this would be a great opportunity to do so. The clean up is being hosted by Cal Heights Clean Streets, 7th District Council Office and Litter Free Long Beach. Community hours will be signed for, tools and refreshments will be provided and two lucky volunteers will win tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific. Litter Free Long Beach will also be collecting tires and e-waste - if it has a cord attached, it’s e-waste, excluding large appliances. Please wear sturdy shoes and a hat. There is parking available along California Avenue as well as 28th Street.
Farm Box has been a huge success, especially after our write up in the LA Times. Our next pick up is tonight, Feb 2nd at Bella Cosa store in Bixby Knolls. I have changed the pick up hours to 5-6:30 as most people are coming after work and needed a later pick up.
Each box is $30, there are 2 pick ups in February so if possible its best to pay for both pick ups at the same time. Its a little easier for me to keep track of payment this way but if you would like to try it out first I completely understand. If its something you would like to continue with I ask everyone to bring payment with them when they pick up their last box for the month. For instance the last pick up in January was the 19th so most people paid for February on that pick up.
Each box is packed full or seasonal veggies, fruit and herbs. I am one of the farmers contributing to the boxes. Everything is grown organically or beyond organically and with ethical practices. Recipes are posted here on our site under the recipe section. If you are interested in signing up or have more questions please let me know.
This past week a few of us attended the Ecological Farming Conference in Pacific Grove, California. It was inspiring to be among my farming peers and other land stewards. I met with Michael O'Gorman from the Farmer Veteran Coalition and was able to hear more about the wonderful work they are doing. I hope to be working with them soon. People were amazed that we were farming in Long Beach and excited about the food shed we are creating. It was a great conference to attend and I feel inspired once again.

Tree planting November 20th.
Hello Tree Fans,
As we told you in our last email, Wrigley is Going Green has been awarded a grant from the Neighborhood Partners Program to plant 60 trees on the streets around the Wrigley Garden on Henderson Avenue.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. on November 20 at the Wrigley Garden which is located at 1950 Henderson Avenue.
All of our volunteers will be entered into a raffle to win 4 turkey dinners provided by the Wrigley Albertsons on Willow Street.
Students who volunteer can receive credit for community service hours.
In addition to planting trees, we will be unveiling the Wrigley Garden mural created by our very own local artist Lisa Wibroe. This was also a part of our grant from the Neighborhood Partners Program.
Many local businesses are supporting this event: Albertsons, El Paisano Market, Northgate Supermarket, Shortnin Bread, Starbucks, and Walgreens. More will be joining soon!
We look forward to seeing all of you on November 20 to continue to help this neighborhood blossom.

Wrapping up Kickstarter and other exciting things...
Hello Long Beach Local-
I hope you are staying cool and keeping those plants watered, its finally the Southern California summer we are accustomed to and man it is hot. I think the tomatoes are ripening before our very eyes.
Few things coming up that I wanted to share with you.
Farm Stand Fridays at Wrigley Garden, Farm Stand is open. Please stop by for a $10 farm box or you can also purchase veggies individually. Please check the website for details. The purpose of the Farm Stand is to provide not only Long Beach residents but residents immediately surrounding Wrigley Garden with fresh fruits and vegetables. If you would like to participate or sponsor a family please let me know. You can also preorder your box by emailing me and I will reserve one for you.
This Saturday, August 28th will wrap up our fundraising efforts at Kickstarter. If you have not yet pledged to Farm Lot 59 you have 5 days left. As of right now we have raised $10,432 toward the start up of the farm. If you have not viewed Kickstarter or our video please check it out here http://kck.st/aP1hWS. We are doing some amazing things and your financial support is needed. Thank you to everyone who has already pledged, I can't wait to get this farm growing!
Also on Saturday the 28th from 10:00am - 12:00pm is the recognition ceremony for the Peace Garden. Located at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 1133 Rhea St. Long Beach, CA. If you are interested in starting a community garden or doing a type of neighborhood garden project this is the perfect opportunity to come and meet the experts. I'm proud that Wrigley Garden and Long Beach Local is part of the supporting team for this garden.
Lastly please mark your calendars for November 20th for a street tree planting at Wrigley Garden, 1950 Henderson Ave, 90806. Our friends, Wrigley is Going Green, wrote and was awarded the Neighborhood Partners Program (NPP) grant and will be planting 60 street trees. Our goal for this tree planting is to leave something beautiful behind after our garden has moved on. We are also planning on having a BBQ/ pot luck this day. Please get in touch if you are interested in volunteering for this event or would like to help organize the BBQ. More information will become available as the date gets closer.

Garden Update
Hello gardeners-
I would like to personally thank these individuals for coming on Saturday to the garden work day. Katie, Maureen, Colleen, Barbara, Henry, Brenda, Mychele, Ben, Darry, Vicente, Lisa, Stephen, Craig, Sareth, Karen, Justin, Justina, Michael and Nathan. I hope I got everyone but I feel like there were more hands on deck. I wanted to especially thank YOU folks for coming to work on a Saturday. The garden looks amazing and its because of you. When we all work together look how fast things get done. The coop got moved, all the weeds were pulled and new mulch was spread. We got a new gardener, friends got to hang out and as always new friends were made.
Community garden work days are necessary for the upkeep of the property. At WG we have very few mandatory work days. I do not believe in nagging others to do what they know they should do. When you are at the garden tending your plot you are responsible for the surrounding area including watering and pulling weeds. When these duties fall behind is when we have to go in as a mob and tighten things up. Saturday was a great example of how working together can accomplish things quickly. Although next time I think we need some music. Shoveling to a tune is much more fun.
To all the gardeners and community members who told me they were coming and did not show up, you are missing out. Its not just a work day at the garden but a chance for you to be part of something bigger. We chat with one another, share the work load and then share a meal. These are the things that build a better community. The garden is just an outlet to connect with friends and neighbors with a common interest.
We all have busy schedules and hectic lives but you must pick your priorities, if you commit to something than you should follow through. Its disappointing to the team if you do not show up when people are counting on you. My coach always told me, "many hands make small work". I have always loved that saying but its not only the work its the infrastructure we are building to build a better Long Beach.
Wrigley Garden will be on Henderson Ave for one more year (October 2011). After that the project is finished, we will move out and the Long Beach Housing Development Company will build Habitat for Humanity housing on the property. Let's make the most of this last year. All the things we talked about doing, now is the time. We need to have more parties, BBQ's, music, cooking demos, all of it. If you are interested in having an event in the garden or want to be part of something we are already doing over there please let us know. Let's make this project a memorable one.
Lastly, mark your calendars for November 20th. Our tree planting partners, Wrigley is Going Green, wrote a grant to plant flowering street trees all along Henderson Ave. We thought its the least we could do to leave this gang torn neighborhood with a little bit of garden. It will be sad for us to move out of this neighborhood who needs this garden so much. But at least we can leave behind some flowering beauty. More details on this will come later.
I hope everyone is having a nice summer take a minute to stop and smell the flowers.

Thank you Factory!!
What a weekend.
Saturday at The Factory/Dragster Expo was awesome. I met so many great Long Beach Locals. It was a perfect opportunity to spread the word about Farm Lot 59 and to promote our Sunday Farmers Market. We raised around $300 bucks thanks to Natalie and all her friends.
Sunday at the Farmers Market I was there selling my hand tied arrangements and promoting the farm. I think people are starting to make the connection with local agriculture and local products. Please keep spreading the word about those very important topics and helping us keep our dollars local.
This Sunday is a pie contest at the market, contact Kelli if you are interested or visit the website http://www.longbeachsundaymarket.com/ for all the updates.
Saturday the 24th we are having a workday at Wrigley Garden from 9:30-1. Our gardeners are being asked to be there at 9 for a quick meeting then its off to do chores followed by a potluck. Should be a great day in the garden. Hope to see you then.

Wrigley is Going Green! and the Wrigley Garden in conjunction with Southern California Edison, the City of Long Beach, Office of Sustainability, Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga and the neighbors of Taper Street and Fashion Avenue are planting 40 trees on April 24, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. We will meet at 1315 Taper Street, Long Beach, CA 90810—Northwest corner of Taper Street and Fashion Avenue. (Taper street is a small street in West Long Beach: Willow Street west to Santa Fe Avenue north, right on 34th Street, left on Delta Avenue, right on Taper Street.)
In preparation of the tree planting, we will be pre-digging the holes Saturday April 17th at 10:00 a.m.
Please bring a shovel and gloves to each occasion.
Volunteer for one or both events!

Thank you all for such a great response to THE FARM LB. We are so excited and thing are really starting to sprout. There were too many responses to reply to individually so below you will find the information on our up coming workshop.
What: Preparing the garden beds and how to making great compost.
Where: 6751 Atlantic Avenue
Long Beach, CA 90805

(I will be checking only a few times through the day)
Take Atlantic Past the 91 freeway and the first left there are some apartment buildings keep going all the way to the end. You will see as black gate and a tractor in the yard.
When: This Saturday March 13th from 8am till around 2pm.
How: Hands on experience so bring the things you will need to get dirty and protect yourself. (Any tools, shovels, turning forks and hard rakes would be great) We have many tools but we are not sure of the turn out.
This is guaranteed to be a great community experience as well as very informative. This will be the kind of experience where you will be able to go back to where you live and apply what you have learned.
I ask that you reply one way or another if you are coming so I will have some idea who and what to expect. Also if you are under 18 you will need to contact me before the workshop as to get permission from your parents. I am looking forward with much excitement to meeting each and everyone.

Take Atlantic Past the 91 freeway and the first left there are some apartment buildings keep going all the way to the end. You will see as black gate and a tractor in the yard.
When: This Saturday March 13th from 8am till around 2pm.
How: Hands on experience so bring the things you will need to get dirty and protect yourself. (Any tools, shovels, turning forks and hard rakes would be great) We have many tools but we are not sure of the turn out.
This is guaranteed to be a great community experience as well as very informative. This will be the kind of experience where you will be able to go back to where you live and apply what you have learned.
I ask that you reply one way or another if you are coming so I will have some idea who and what to expect. Also if you are under 18 you will need to contact me before the workshop as to get permission from your parents. I am looking forward with much excitement to meeting each and everyone.

Its raining but we are still working
Today's work day is still happening. We will be at the garden at 2:00. Its a little chilly so dress warm. We will be building boxes for our orchard and if you would like a box for yourself a $5 donation is requested.

Wrigley Heights Garden & Dog Park Meeting- Tomorrow
Tomorrow Saturday the 6th:
Tomorrow's meeting will be at Guadalupe's Grill @ 9:00 am. There has been a lot of conversation going back and forth about the meeting location so unless I am told otherwise I am assuming this is where they want to have it.

Wrigley Heights Garden & Dog Park Meeting

Thanks for everyone for standing by. I am waiting for the City Council office to confirm the location for the meeting. I will let you all know as soon as I hear from them. But plan on 9am somewhere in the Wrigley neighborhood.
We are still having a work day at the garden. We will be building boxes for our orchard. We will be there from 2:00 until dusk. Bring water and gloves if you use them. I'm sorry that this got pushed and next time we have a work day there will be a potluck following. I promise!
